GOLF AEROCLUB DE SANTIAGO

Project Description

Real Aeroclub de Santiago was established in 1947 in an area close to Santiago de Compostela Airport (Galicia, Northwest Spain), 15km southwest of the city centre.

The airport expansion in the period 2010-2012 required an enlarged runway and a new terminal, to be built in the land were the 18 hole golf course was set, affecting a large number of holes that caused to look for a new site. The board decided to select a new site as close to Santiago de Compostela city as possible, and awarded our team with the Design and Construction management of the golf course project.

A 62 hectare site at Ames town, 10 km northwest of Santiago, became the place for the new project. Similarly as it happened at Augas Santas project years before, some of the owners did not sell their properties at the last minute, so we had to create an alternative routing plan and design in a few weeks before construction works started.

Project preparation and permitting for the 18 hole course plus all sports facilities and clubhouse, took one year. The construction works could started by 2011 and finished by 2012.

The course is set in the area were elevation changes are severe, having only a few areas with trees.

We developed a strategic design with a limited number of bunkers (49), in order to balance the difficulty due to elevation changes, generous greens and a variety of holes, both in lengths¡, design and character.

The resulting 71 par of 5.821 meters is an interesting course for this celebrated member course.
